How to find a local, reliable heat pump installation specialist
Heat pumps are a renewable energy source that can help you cut down on your heating bills whilst also lowering your home’s carbon footprint. You can choose between a ground source heat pump and an air source heat pump. Speak to a local specialist for advice and a free quote.
Which type of heat pump should I get?
Heat pumps are an energy efficient way of producing heat and hot water. They do this by taking heat from their environment and transferring it into a liquid, which is then compressed to increase its temperature.
The most common types of heat pumps include:
- Air to water source heat pumps
- Air to air source heat pumps
- Ground source heat pumps
Which system you get will depend on your home and your specific needs. Ground source heat pumps are usually only installed in homes where three air to water heat pumps can’t satisfy demand, such as properties with more than eight bedrooms. Though air to air heat pumps provide instantaneous heat (warm air), they don’t heat radiators or retain heat.
Heat pumps are great because the amount of heat they produce is more than the amount of electricity they use. This makes them more efficient than other heating systems. According to the Energy Saving Trust, heat pump systems are expected to become the cheapest and lowest carbon form of heating available.

Factors to consider when hiring a heat pump specialist
It’s really important that you choose a reliable heat pump installation company to carry out work on your home. Failing to do this can result in stress and expensive repairs. Look out for heat pump installers who are Microgeneration Certification Scheme (MCS) accredited, as heating engineers who are MCS certified demonstrate a commitment to high quality installations, approved products, and customer care.
Before you hire, you should do your research to ensure that your heat pump specialists:
- Are an experienced company with a strong history of successful projects
- Have all the necessary licenses and insurance needed to protect you and their workers
- Have a good range of positive reviews from previous customers vouching for their reliability
- Are available to carry out the work in the timeframe you need it by
- Are quoting a price and payment option that you are happy with, having compared the quote with other local heat pump companies
A local heat pump installer is more likely to respond quickly, as they’ll be right around the corner and ready to help.

How much does it cost to install a heat pump?
How much you’ll end up spending on a new heat pump depends on a range of factors, including:
- How big your property is
- Whether you’re installing the pump in an existing house or in a new build (installation costs tend to be cheaper for new builds)
- The amount of prep work needed before the pump can be installed (for example, will you need a new electricity supply from fuse box to pump, and will you need to replace old radiators to help improve efficiency)
According to the Energy Saving Trust, the average air source heat pump costs between £7,000 and £13,000. On the other hand, ground source heat pumps tend to be more expensive, costing anywhere between £14,000 and £19,000. The added costs account for the extra work needed to install boreholes in your garden.
To help with the cost of installing a heat pump, homeowners in England and Wales can apply for a grant of £7,500 from the Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS).
Though ground source heat pumps are more expensive, they’re also better at heating your home, offering greater fuel savings and lower energy bills in the long run. The main cost factor to consider for air source heat pumps is what condition your radiators are in. Older, type 10 and type 11 radiators will likely need replacing before you can install your heat pump, whilst newer types 21 and 22 will most likely be fine.
If your property has underfloor heating, then an air source heat pump is a recommended investment, as underfloor heating and air pumps work very efficiently together.
Whichever heat pump you choose, it is a good idea to insulate your property as much as you can before you get your heat pump installed, as a heat pump will work inefficiently in a poorly insulated home.

Do I need planning permission to install a heat pump?
Unless you live in a listed building, you won’t usually need to apply for permission to install a ground source heat pump.
You can avoid applying for permission for an air source pump as well, as long as your installation meets the limits and conditions outlined by the Planning Portal website. This includes ensuring your heat pump complies with the Microgeneration Certification Scheme. You can ensure yours does by hiring an MCS accredited and certified installer.
Questions to ask a heat pump specialist before you hire
Before you hire, we recommend you ask your heat pump installer a few questions:
How many years of experience do you have?
Knowing how much experience your heat pump installer has will allow you to pick a company who you are confident has enough expertise to carry out a high quality job. When you’re finding a heating engineer through Rated People, head over to their profile to check out the pictures on their work gallery and their ratings and reviews.
How much will the job cost?
Asking how much the job will cost will help you budget for the installation and ensure price transparency before you hire. How much you’ll end up spending depends on the scope of your project, and where you live in the UK, so make sure you add plenty of details when you post a job.
How long will the job take?
Knowing what your project’s estimated timeline is will help you set realistic expectations about how long your heat pump installation will take to complete.
Are you licensed and insured?
Make sure to ask your heat pump installation company what insurance they have before you hire. This will protect both parties and ensure you hire a skilled tradesperson. Whilst it’s not a requirement, it’s a good idea for your heat pump specialist to have public liability insurance to cover you and them against any accidental damage or personal injuries.
